Default Music Therapy in Addiction Recovery

The topic that I am going to bring up at an AA meeting tonight has to do with Music and it's role in recovery. Recent studies show that music can reach the parts of the human brain that are linked to addiction and can function as an integral part of recovery.

The questions to ask are this:
Does music play any part of your recovery journey?
Do you use music to calm your mind or to destress?
Do you use music to enhance your coping strategies and preventing relapse?

I look forward to reading your input and thoughts about the role music plays in your recovery.

I can say yes to all 3 questions. A lot of my music connects me to God when nothing else does. The words often say what I can't. As long I continue to turn my will over to God with or without music I know I won't relapse. Sometimes it is just a fun thing I like to share with others. It is not unusual for me to lean back with music on, looking at my pic of Jesus and serenity prayer and focus on my lighthouses. It is very calming.

Janbear,

Thank you for your post. I listen to many different types of music. Gospel, contemporary Christian music, classic rock, and country. I also really enjoy bluegrass and jazz. As you can see, I enjoy a variety. Last Saturday night I went to an alcohol free barn dance where they played waltzes, polkas, and old time country music. It was great fun listening to the music and watching the people dancing. There were old timers and young teenagers out there on the dance floor. It was a fun and therapeutic evening for me.

Elroy is 85 years old. He plays the guitar and sings. The band had a guy playing the accordion. There was an electric guitar player and a base player, two Ukulele players who I know personally, and another acoustical guitar player.

I listen to some of what you listen too. Christian classic rock, soft rock. I have to be careful what country I listen to. I like a lot of older music from the 60s to the 80's
