The Curmudgeon
by Vonette Bright “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:44 When Stephanie Whitson was a young mother, she lived across the street from a very grumpy old man. In fact, no one in the neighborhood liked him. When his wife passed away, Stephanie began getting nudges from God. You know, the “still small voice” which points you to a God-given opportunity. So with much fear and trembling, Stephanie placed a rose and bud vase on the man’s porch. With it she left a note saying she was thinking about and praying for him. Shortly thereafter, her doorbell rang. It was the grumpy old man! With tears in his eyes, he thanked her. He had been angry at God for taking his wife. But Stephanie’s note showed him God still cared. Friend, listen to God’s still small voice. Be God’s sunshine in your neighborhood!

A woman I sponsored wanted to look into NA, unfortunately, her denial didn't allow her to stay there. She borrowed my books, got angry and threw them away instead of giving them back.
She continued to phone me. Her biggest thing was about being angry with God. I said, "Don't worry, He has strong shoulders." She hasn't drank for a long time, and yet she walks around stoned 3/4s of the time. Substitution doesn't work. Just because you gave up your drug of choice, which for me, was what ever was there, doesn't mean that my addictive mind won't clasp onto something else if I don't allow myself the healing and the spiritual life of recovery. It isn't about thou shall nots, this is a program of suggestions; but there are some darn well betters, or you will pick up a drink or a drug and wonder what happened.
