We're Not Competing
One of the first things we'll all notice about recovery when we're new is its lack of a hierarchy. This is intentional, recovery is not a competitive thing because of that there are no winners or losers in it, only those of us who are trying to do something about our problem. And in that sense those of us who are trying will be able to win out when it comes to having this problem and those of us that don't try are going to be the ones who are going to lose out. We still set goals in recovery and it's important that we do, because they mark the fact that recovery works for all who are willing to try. The first goal we all learned about in recovery is one day. We can only do our recovery program one day at a time and it starts for all of us with our first day, and then as our days add up we make note of them as well, our first month, then 3, 6, 9 months and then our all important first year, which proved to all of us that we can keep on doing this for the rest of our lives. I don't have any metals to give out in recovery, nor are there any lifetime achievement awards. Just the satisfaction of knowing that all of us are winners by us being in recovery and trying to help each other do what none of us could do one our own.
