Default A Continual Source of Peace

A Continual Source of Peace

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8

Scientists tell us that the very act of stroking a pet dog or cat can reduce stress. Such intimacy releases oxytocin into the blood stream—the so-called “bonding hormone”—resulting in feelings of well-being and security.

But what if your pet is not around, or you don’t have a pet? Scripture suggests that meditating on the Word of God can have an always-on effect of peace and strength in difficult times. The psalmist wrote that the man who meditates on God’s Word is like a fruitful tree planted by a river (Psalm 1). God told Joshua, just before entering the Promised Land of Canaan, that if he kept his mind focused on God’s Word, he would be prosperous and successful (Joshua 1:8). The writer to the Hebrews said that God’s Word can help us understand our own heart (Hebrews 4:12).

Enjoy your pet if you have one. But don’t neglect a more permanent source of encouragement: the great and precious promises in the living and active Word of God (2 Peter 1:4).

The more reverence we have for the Word of God, the more joy we shall find in it.
