Outside your assumptions

Your assumptions exert a powerful and continuous influence over your thoughts, actions, priorities. Don’t let those assumptions be hijacked by your own neglect or by anyone else’s designs.

It’s easy to assume what you’ve always assumed and to never even realize you’re doing it. Then you wonder why you feel perpetually stuck.

It’s just as easy to assume what the loudest, most persistent voices tell you to assume. Then you wonder why you always feel disappointed.

It’s really quite a simple and refreshing thing to walk away from your most stultifying assumptions. All you have to do is entertain the possibility that there is a better possibility, that you could be mistaken.

Maybe what you assume to be too difficult, or uncomfortable, awkward or inconvenient could actually be highly liberating, inspiring, energizing. Perhaps that thing you never wanted to do can become the thing you always rush to do.

Notice your many assumptions, challenge them, explore the large and edifying space outside of them. And add great richness to every part of your life.

— Ralph Marston
